Guide Danny Layne insists fishing can’t get any better than what is taking place now at Lake Don Pedro. Layne has been fishing the middle to upper reaches of the lake out of the Moccasin Point Recreation Area. Large schools of kokanee along with king salmon have been located from Hatch Creek into Middle Bay and also off of Six Bit Gulch. Nice rainbows are being caught from 10' to 30' using Vance's Sockeye Slammers, Ex-Cel Lures and Slim Willies in tandem with a night Crawler, bows will average two pounds with some fish bigger.
The Kokanee bite here in the Middle of the reservior is wide open with very little fishing pressure. Target the kokes at depths from 45' to 60'. Most productive set-ups this past week included Uncle Larry's Spinners, Glitter Bug Micro Hoochies, and U. V. Kokanee Killers fished behind either a Shasta Sling Blade, a Vance's Dodger or a "Wild Thing" Dodger. Scent pattern this week, flavored Shoepeg corn using garlic, vanilla or anise working quite well on the above mentioned lures. Kokanee are chunky and a solid 14.5 inches, expect limits. King salmon are holding below the kokanee schools around the 80' depth and hitting rolled shad or anchovies cured in Pautzke's Fire Brine. Most kings in the 14" to 17" with bigger fish going three pounds.
