The Klamath River got the badly needed rains for the salmon runs from Weitchpec to Happy Camp. Still early for steelhead but the salmon migrate up to Iron Gate Dam usually by October 1st, but you never know with big rains, as there are probably a few steelhead in the mix as well. Use Kaufman stones size 10, princes size 8, poxy back hairs ear size 10 or 12, October caddis size 8, Fox poopah size 14 or 12. Possible a clown egg but it’s early for that. You can easily catch salmon on a 9 to 12 weight fly rod nymphing. This is the time of year we call CALASKA because this river seems to produce great salmon catches on flies! The river constantly needs rain to combat the algae that continues to strangle the oxygen levels in this river. If we get huge rains that lure salmon and steelhead in early and we continue to receive rains, we could really have a bunker harvest folks just in time for Halloween. Do your best rain dance and hope we get the badly needed rains. www.jacktrout.com, (530) 926-4540
